Be Good To Your Hair: 6 Common Hair Care Mistakes

hair straightener mistakes

by Femita

Although you regularly visit your hairdresser, use a good conditioner and apply a hair mask every week, your hair doesn’t look really healthy. How is this possible? Maybe you mistreat your hair without even realizing. Here are some common hair care mistakes.

Blow-dry wet hair

It’s never a good idea to blow-dry wet hair, because you expose your hair to the heat for way too long, causing damage to the hair. After showering, wrap a towel around your hair and leave it for ten minutes. Afterwards air dry your hair for ten more minutes and only then start using your blow-dryer. If you feel like this takes too much of your time, use the time in between to do your makeup now that your hair is not in the way.

Rub your hair dry

Don’t rub, squeeze. Never rub wet hair with a towel as it may break your hair or make it frizzy and static. Instead squeeze out the water and blot your hair with a towel.

Old combs and brushes

Many people use the same brush or comb for years and tend to forget they can wear out and cause damage to your hair, like e.g. tangles, causing it to break. Besides styling products always leave some residue on combs and brushes. This can make your hair look dull and lose elasticity. Replace your combs and brushes at least two times a year.

Brush wet hair

When you try to brush wet hair, you overstretch your hair causing it to break. It’s better to disentangle your hair with a wide-tooth comb. Start with the ends and slowly work your way upwards.

Always wear your hair in a tail

If you prefer to wear your hair in a tail and you always make the tail at the same place, then the hair will get damaged at the place where you have the hair tie, especially if the hair tie has a nasty piece of metal. Try a different hairstyle for a change or buy different hair ties without the metal piece.

Daily straightening or blow-drying

Blow-dryers and hair straighteners can get very hot, which is not good for your hair. It’s like frying your own hair. Therefore only do it every two days. It can be very liberating to finally learn to accept your natural hair growth. Why not keep your curls for once? Try to limit the use of a hair straightener to two times a week and use the low temperature setting on your blow-dryer. It’s also a good idea to invest in quality styling products that protect your hair against the heat of these devices.
