How To Stick To Your New Year’s Resolutions

stick to new year's resolutions

by Femita

The start of a new year usually involves making New Year’s resolutions. Unfortunately most resolutions won’t  make it past the first week due to a lack of willpower and support. This is how to maximize your chances of success.

Be positive

Being positive is half the battle won. Self-confidence and a positive attitude alone can take you place you never thought possible. Try to see every obstacle as a challenge and focus on results.

One at a time

Pare your New Year’s resolutions down to one. This will make it easier for you to focus on your goals. Think about what’s the most important thing you want to achieve this year.

Write it down

Formulate your goal as specifically as you can and write it on a piece of paper. You can either put it on the fridge or keep it in your wallet. It will remind you to review your resolution at least once a week.

Realistic

It’s important to keep your goals realistic. It should be a challenge but not overwhelming. Have some patience and allow yourself the time to achieve that goal.

Be specific

Say “I will eat one extra portion of fruit or vegetables a day” and “I will take the stairs instead of the elevator once a day” instead of “I will lead a healthier lifestyle this year”. It’s better to set several small but specific goals than a single vague one.

Reward yourself

We all need a pat on the back from time to time. Whenever you reach an objective or notice positive results, reward yourself with a small gift or a fun activity. This will motivate you to keep going.

Visualization

Use mental imagery to visualize how your life will change once you have achieved your goals. What will your life look like? How will you feel?

Share

Sharing your resolutions with other people has multiple advantages. They will hold you accountable for sticking to your goals, support you and some might even join you. It’s easier to accomplish your goals together, so spread the word!

Avoid temptation

If you want to drink less alcohol, then stay away from bars and wedding receptions. Sometimes it’s just as simple as that. Think about how you will handle difficult situations in advance.

Forgive yourself

It’s human to make a slip from time to time, so don’t be too harsh on yourself. See them as short interruptions and just pick up where you left off. It’s no use feeling guilty.
