Lingerie Do’s and Don’ts: How to Buy the Right Lingerie and Enjoy It for Many Years to Come

lingerie do's and don'ts

by Femita

Buying the right lingerie sounds a lot easier than it is. Many women have trouble finding the right bra style, fit and size. More doubt kicks in with regard to lingerie care. How many times should I wash my lingerie? Can I put my bra in the dryer? And what’s the best way to store it?

Do’s

Shake it

This is the secret to the perfect cleavage. Put on your bra, lean forward for a moment and shake, shake, shake. This will make your breasts fall into the cups of your bra, providing you with a beautiful cleavage. However, make sure you’re buying the right bra size. To check this, sit down in the fitting room. If the chest band is tickling under your arm, your bra is too big. Get some advice from the store staff if you’re not sure.

Treasure

Treat your lingerie sets as a treasure and honor them with their own separate drawer. Put your padded bras on top to keep them from being dented. Don’t forget to fasten the hooks every time you store bras so the they won’t damage the delicate fabric.

Pick the right hook

When buying a new bra, try it on using the hook that’s closest to the edge. That way you can still move on to the other hooks when your chest band becomes more elastic and less tight from wearing. This will ensure a longer lifespan for your favorite pieces.

Wash by hand

Preferably hand wash your lingerie. That way it maintains its original shape and appearance. If you still want to put your delicate pieces in the washer, make sure you always use a lingerie laundry bag and fasten the bra’s hooks. This will protect the fabric. Always use mild soap and check the label for more washing instructions.

Don’ts

Buy without trying

Whether you know your size or not, it’s always a good idea to physically try the lingerie on. The staff members at your favorite lingerie store will be happy to take your measurement and give recommendations. It does wonders for your self-confidence too!

Wear white on white

Don’t want your lingerie to be visible under a white top or white pants? Then avoid white underpants or a white bra. Skin tone colors like mocha or cappuccino are better options. Red lingerie might work too, but in this case try before you buy.

Wash rarely

Many women have an irrational fear of damaging their lingerie sets by washing them too often. In reality, your bra needs a regular wash to stay in shape. If you’ve been wearing the same bra for some time, sweat will start to affect the fabric. This can cause white spots to appear that are very hard to remove. Wash or rinse your lingerie daily with mild soap to keep it in good condition.

Put in the dryer

To dry your bras, never put them in the dryer or next to a heat source like a radiator. Also try to avoid sunlight, as it makes the colors fade and will damage the elasticity of your favorite bra. The right way to dry a bra is to put it up somewhere around the house, keeping it away from direct sunlight.

How do you take care of your favorite pieces?

I always wash my agent provocateur sets by hand. They are not cheap so I’m happy to use some elbow grease to keep them in good condition
