I cannot count how many times I have been in front of the mirror testing different outfits for a job interview. Of course appearance and clothing are not the most important factor, but they tell so much about you and whether you like it or not they convey a certain message. There is only one first impression and it better be a good one.
Corporate culture
For dressing appropriately it is crucial to get to know the company and the corporate culture. There are different ways to do this. A first step could be to do some research online. Check the company’s website and pay attention to the branding, design and pictures. Most of the times this will give you a good idea about the company’s philosophy. If you really want to be sure, you could ask someone working for the company what the dress code is or check how people are dressed by visiting the company beforehand. Of course, we all know people in the fashion business dress differently than people in banking or insurance. Common sense goes a long way.
Feeling comfortable
As most people dress more formally for a job interview, these smart clothes may feel a bit uncomfortable. That is why it is not a bad idea to wear the outfit – whether it is a formal dress or a suit – a couple of times before you go to the interview. That way, you will appear more natural and confident on the big day.
What to wear
suit or dress
Should you wear a more traditional suit or a chic, professional dress? Most of the times, both options are ok. However, key words should always be: professional, chic and conservative. This means that your suit or dress cannot be too short, tight or sexy and preferably has a neutral color like black, blue, brown or gray. It is always risky to wear something trendy or frivolous if you want to be taken seriously. You can always bring in more of your playful nature later on. Oh, by the way, do I really need to say your clothes should be clean and wrinkle-free?
hair and make-up
Keep it simple is all I can say about this. Don’t experiment with complex red carpet hairstyles or glamorous make-up. Pick sober colors and apply sparingly. Make it a habit to check your hair and make-up in a mirror right before each interview.
accessories
Leave your large hoop earrings or statement jewelry at home for once. It is also the right time to take out your piercings and to decide which of the 8 rings on your fingers you really like the most. Swap your oversized shoulder bag for a classy portfolio or briefcase. If your goal is to stand out, add some color with a scarf or earrings.
perfume
I will leave this up to you. Either you stick to only deodorant or you add some light perfume. In any case, less is more. Remember that not all people like the same fragrances or that some fragrances might even evoke bad memories to certain people.
shoes
Avoid open shoes or stiletto heels at all costs. Keep your toes covered and go for two to three inch pumps. Mind that you wear polished and well-maintained shoes with heels that are in tact. When you buy new shoes for the job interview, walk around in them for a while so you feel comfortable in them.
stockings
It doesn’t matter in how good a shape you are, bare legs are generally considered as being unprofessional, so it is advisable to wear stockings. Make sure that the colors match with the rest of your outfit and there is no print on your stockings.
